Dictionary Help

DOCUMENTATION: DICTIONARY HELP

Click the 'Dictionary' tab .

ENGLISH TO SPANISH:
If selected, Pythoñol will only search the dictionary for Spanish translations to English words and terms .

SPANISH TO ENGLISH:
If selected, Pythoñol will only search the dictionary for English translations to Spanish words and terms .

BOTH:
If selected, Pythoñol will search the dictionary for both English and Spanish translations to the word or term entered .

EXTENDED SEARCH:
If 'Extended search' IS checked, Pythoñol will perform a search that is likely to return more matches . However, the 'Extended search' does take slightly longer to perform . The search of the dictionary will be performed in a case-insensitive manner, and Pythoñol WILL show results in which your selected search word or term appears as a substring of a result or is an exact match .

If 'Extended search' is NOT checked, Pythoñol will show only definitions and translations that match the search word or term exactly (letter-for-letter, case-insensitive) . The search of the dictionary will be performed in a case-insensitive manner, and Pythoñol will NOT show results in which your selected search word or term is simply a substring of the result . If 'Extended search' is NOT checked, the strictest, most accurate search will be performed (This is the default behavior of Pythoñol) . This is also the fastest type of search . However, for the greatest number of matches to your word or phrase, you should make sure that 'Extended search' is checked . Not checking 'Extended search' may greatly reduce the number of matches returned, and could, quite possibly, result in no matches at all being returned .

SAVE TO FILE:
The 'Save To File' feature is a quick and easy way to save your translations to a plain text file . Simply click the 'Save To File' button, select a file name to save to, and click 'Ok' . The dictionary definitions found for the selected word or term will be saved to file for your future reference .

WORD / PHRASE:
The 'Word / Phrase:' text field is where you type in the word or term you wish to have defined and translated . You can also select previously used words and terms from the drop-down list . The drop-down list stores a 'history' of up to 30 previously used words and terms .

LOOKUP! BUTTON:
Clicking the 'LOOKUP!' button tells Pythoñol to attempt to define and translate the word or term you have entered in the 'Word / Phrase:' field (described above) .

SPANISH LETTERS TOOLBAR:
The Spanish Letters Toolbar contains several commonly-used, accented Spanish letters, not generally found on standard American keyboards . Clicking one of the letters on the Spanish Letters Toolbar will insert that accented letter into the 'Word / Phrase:' text field at the cursor position . This feature has been provided to help eliminate the need for an external 'character map' application .

TRANSLATING A WORD OR PHRASE:
The steps to translating a word or phrase are very simple:

1 . Type in the word or term you wish to have defined and translated into the 'Word / Phrase:' text field, or select a previously used verb or term from the drop-down list .

2 . Use the Spanish Letters Toolbar , as needed, to insert accented Spanish letters into the 'Word / Phrase:' text field .

3 . For best results, make sure that 'Exact matches only' is NOT checked . However, if you find it necessary to view only results that match your term or word letter-for-letter, make sure that 'Exact matches only' is checked .

4 . Click the 'LOOKUP!' button . Any available definitions and translations will be shown in the dictionary window .

5 . If you wish to save the definitions and translations for this search to a file, click the 'Save To File' button, enter a file name, and click 'Ok' . Your definition and translation information for the selected word or phrase will be saved for your future reference .

6 . If you are running a Linux/Unix version of Pythoñol, and have an LRPng/LPR-based spooler system on your computer, you may print the results by clicking 'File' -> 'Print...' on the Pythoñol main menu . (Sorry, Windows users!) See 'Help' --> 'Help...' on the menu for more information on printing in Pythoñol .

If you have the Festival text-to-speech extension installed and usable, you may hear the words pronounced by clicking the light blue 'Play' button, generally located to the left of your screen . Click 'Help' -> 'Festival Text-to-Speech Help...' on the menu for more information .
